New Dog in the McDonnell House

On Saturday, March 13, Amelie joined the McDonnell clan. At 1.5 years old she is full of life, love and energy. We don't know too much about her background, but she was surrendered to Animal Care and Control in NYC, spayed, and then brought into Posh Pets Rescue in Manhattan. After placing her in a foster home, Posh Pets put her profile up on petfinder.com. And we found her there. It was love at first sight. (Her bio said she was a sweetie - true - and good with cats. More about that in a future post).

Amelie is all Jack Russell Terrier - did we mention that she is crazy about playing ball? When she first arrived in the house after an hour-long drive from Manhattan, she immediately stood on two legs sniffing a closed drawer. The confusion we felt immediately turned into a laugh - Earl's racketball ball was inside. Two hours later, Amelie was still ready for more ball playing. She uses the ball as a tool to make friends, and she is a real athlete.

So we have spent the last few weeks getting to know each other, and, through Amelie, remembering the young Earl, the one who had vast amounts of boundless energy. Amelie has Earl beat in that department!

The photo above is of Amelie on the ride home from NYC. She had just gotten into the car and we were stopped at a red light.

Wonderful!! I love the little wet spot on someone's knee... no doubt a little doggie drool. No outfit is complete without some doggie spit or cat hair.

Dear Amelie, You are a cutie, and one lucky gal !
Congratulations and Best Wishes to you and to the McDonnell Clan.

Words are somehow inadequate to express the depth of the human/animal bond . . . nobody knows that better than the McDonnell family!

Best wishes to all of you! By the way, how do you pronounce "Amelie"?

I believe it's like the title of the movie: ah-meh-lee.

How wonderful! We have two shelter kitty adoptions. They're like a brother and sister team, including licks and kisses to the occasion thwap! on the head. The girl-kitty is named AMELIE, after the wonderful French movie. She is the kindest, most gentle, gorgeous brown tabby. She's quite graceful, almost regal--so mellow, beautiful and smart. We often kid that she came from the streets Montmartre!

Just lost our Aussie Shepherd Mix Ajo of 16 years old this week. She will likely be looking for Earl up there along with her other buddies that went before her. I wish you well with your new friend! It gives me hope as we ponder another friend to join our family!

Regards! -Heidi (long time Mutts fan!)

This made me tear up. What a sweet girl who couldn't have asked for a better family. And the fact she knew where Earl's ball was just puts a huge smile on my face, it felt like it was Earl giving his blessing and welcoming Amelie into the house by sharing his ball.

Thanks for sharing.

Amelie reminds me of a dog Down East Animal Refuge just fostered. I had to have him shaved because of ticks and matted hair. Rusty was falling over trying to walk. You should see him only after 6 weeks! Looks like a 15 lb corgi mix - same color as your Amelie. Happy with his foster mom who may adopt him. Lots of toys & love. Last week I fostered a tiny little dog, about 7 lbs. Very Mixed . He is now in a foster care/trial home. Wants to be held all the time and sounds like a kitten. God's little creates need all the help & love they can obtain from us humans!

Oh, Patrick, you're making me cry! I missed this post, but just read about (and saw) Amelie in the newshletter. I'm SO happy that you're ready to open your heart to another pet, and proud of you for leading the way by walking the walk and adopting a beautiful little girl. :) I know Earl must be smiling to see you playing ball for hours. :) Thank you for all you do; may you have endless hours of pleasure and joy with your new companion in her forever home. <3

Patrick, thanks so much for speaking for so many of us animal lovers who share our lives and our love with these sweet creatures. Our lives would be very empty without their sharing their love and affection with us -- "their humans". Your rescue of Amelie reminds me so much of my two Shitzu pups that I brought into our household who brought so much joy into our lives. Our elder male Shitzu immediately took charge of their training in the proper behavior for his household. He was totally depreased having lost his female counter-part. But the new pups gave him a job to do in their training that really helped to empower the overall quality of his life. After coming out of his depression, the new pups helped him to live 3.5 extra fun loving years that he might not have had without them there. Just goes to show that love can solve most problems or at the very least help establish priorities that make our lives better.

Thanks.

That's a beautiful little doggy face, with all kinds of character and charm shining through. It's so easy to read the hope and yearning in Amelie's face. I wish many, many years of love and happiness for her and hew new family.

We met you in Delaware last year at a book signing, with our very own JRT rescue, Rufus. Rufus came into our lives after we lost beloved Better to lymphoma. The first day we watched him come into our home and race after a toy, I cried. Reading how Amelie sniffed the drawer for the ball brought it all back. She is lucky to have a great family. Lots of love to you from Gary, Liz and Rufus.

Congratulations to Amelie and the McDonnell household! Earl made sure that you found another sweetie that will fill your days and hearts with love and wags. You gave Earl love and we were the beneficiaries of your happy life with him. Now we know that you will have more doggie kisses and belly rubs to keep you smiling. We have met you at book signings and were touched by your kindness. We are truly happy for you!

I hope Amelie "meets" up with Earl, if not on earth then in the comic strip! Maybe he even falls for her ;)
